Why Work at Kira
We're a small, senior team building something people rely on every day, not a demo, not a side project. You'll own real problems end to end, ship quickly, and work alongside people who care as much about privacy and quality as they do about speed. We value clear thinking, low ego, and a bias to action over talk.
That said, we'd rather be honest about what this actually means day to day than let you discover the reality three weeks into the job. This page is written to help the right people recognize themselves in it, and to help the wrong fit realize that early, before either of us wastes time.
Our Culture, and the Real Tradeoffs That Come With It
Abstract values are easy to write and hard to trust. Here's what each one actually looks like in practice, including the part that's harder, not just the part that sounds good.
- Ownership. You run with problems end to end, not tickets. The tradeoff: there's less hand-holding here than at a larger company. If you thrive with detailed direction and regular check-ins, the ambiguity of "figure out the right approach yourself" can feel unmoored rather than freeing.
- Craft. We sweat the details that make software feel effortless. The tradeoff: shipping something merely functional isn't enough here, which means the bar for "done" is genuinely higher, and that can slow things down in ways that feel frustrating if you're optimizing purely for speed.
- Trust. We're honest with each other and with our users, including about things that aren't going well. The tradeoff: direct feedback is the norm, not the exception, if you prefer feedback softened or delivered indirectly, our style may feel blunt at first.
- Focus. We do a few things extremely well rather than many things adequately. The tradeoff: we say no to a lot of reasonable ideas, including some genuinely good ones, because pursuing everything would dilute the things we've actually committed to.
- Balance. We work hard and sustainably, and we respect time off. The tradeoff: because the team is small, an absence is genuinely felt, covering for someone isn't invisible the way it might be on a team of 200.
Who Thrives Here, and Who Might Not
Being direct about this upfront saves everyone time. You'll likely thrive here if you want real ownership over ambiguous problems, prefer direct feedback over diplomatic hedging, and get energy from a small team where your individual work is clearly visible rather than diffused across a large org chart.
You might be happier elsewhere if you want a defined career ladder with predictable promotion timelines, prefer structured processes with regular check-ins over self-directed ambiguity, or are optimizing primarily for the highest possible total compensation, larger, later-stage companies will generally out-offer a team our size.
Neither of these is a judgment, they're just different working styles, and being honest about the mismatch upfront is better for both of us than discovering it three months in.

How We Hire
- Intro conversation — we get to know your goals, and you get your questions answered, this is genuinely conversational, not a scripted competency assessment.
- A practical exercise or portfolio review, relevant to the actual work you'd be doing, not a generic take-home unrelated to the role.
- Team interviews, focused on craft and how you collaborate, since you'll be working closely with a small group, not disappearing into a large team.
- A final conversation and reference checks — then an offer.
We review every application carefully, but we're not hiring at scale, we add a small number of people per year to a small team, which means the bar to advance is genuinely high, and a generic application without specifics about why Kira, and why this problem, typically doesn't move forward.
How to Stand Out
- Show work you're genuinely proud of, and walk us through the decisions behind it, not just the outcome.
- Be specific about what you owned versus what the team did around you, vague credit-taking reads as a red flag, not a strength.
- Tell us why Kira, specifically, what you'd want to build here that you couldn't build elsewhere. "I love the product" alone doesn't tell us much, what problem do you actually want to work on?
Equal Opportunity
Kira is an equal-opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of every background and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, or any other protected characteristic. Need accommodations during the process? Just let us know.
How to Apply
Send your resume and a short note to support@kiraai.ai. Tell us what you'd want to build at Kira, that matters more to us than a cover letter template, and it's usually the difference between an application that gets a real response and one that doesn't.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions.
Yes. Many roles are remote or hybrid; some are based in San Francisco. Each listing notes its location.
A short intro, a practical exercise, team interviews, and a final conversation with reference checks. Expect the full process to take a few weeks, not months, and we aim to be respectful of your time throughout.
Yes. Email support@kiraai.ai with what you do and how you'd help, we review every note, though given our team size, we genuinely can't respond individually to every one.
It depends on the role and location. Mention your situation in your application and we'll be transparent about what we can support.
Possibly not, at our size, growth tends to come from taking on more ownership organically rather than a formal ladder with defined checkpoints. If a structured career path matters more to you than ambiguity and ownership, that's worth weighing honestly before applying.
